Congratulations to Dr. Keith Brunt and his team at NB-Biomatrix for winning the 2014 BioInnovation Challenge in Halifax on Tuesday October 21, 2014.

Having received professional pitch coaching along with the other contestants in the weeks leading up to the Challenge, Brunt faced off with seven other biotech startups on Monday. The top three contestants passed through to the final round to pitch before a live audience.

Jenny Keleher, Marketing Coordinator for BioNB was a part of the audience. “The quality of the pitches was really impressive. It really spoke to the quality of the pitch training.”

Fenol-Farm and Athletigen Technologies Inc., both from Nova Scotia, also presented before the live audience. It was in the question and answer session wherein NB-Biomatrix really stood out.

“The judges focused a number of their questions on commercialization and regulatory approval,” Keleher said. “Brunt had done his homework and handled these questions expertly.”

Brunt is very pleased with his team’s success. “As a finalist, the training alone was worth participating in BioInnovation Challenge,” he said. “But actually winning means I can leverage the prize package to hire co-op students and advance our business.” He plans to hire business students to aid in commercialization and engineering students to look into industrial production.

The success of NB-Biomatrix is a reminder of the research capacity and innovation that exists in the biotech sector in New Brunswick. “This award brings recognition to a key sector in the Atlantic region, and proves that New Brunswick can hold its own as an innovator in life sciences,” said Meaghan Seagrave, Executive Director of BioNB.
