Introducing the Spudnik Stout! Taste it at Innovation at the Station!

A beer tech MASHUP between BioNB, Picaroons, and the team at the CCNB Biorefinery Technology Scale-Up Centre Jenny Keleher September 29, 2016

What is the most exciting thing we could have possibly done for 2016 Global Biotech Week? For us it doesn’t get much more exciting than imagining, brewing, and serving up a custom brew with our friends at Picaroons Traditional Ales and the Biorefinery Technology Scale-Up Centre at CCNB.

Introducing the SPUDNIK STOUT: a smooth full bodied stout brewed with russet POTATOES grown right here in New Brunswick! The brew is a true mashup of the art and science of brewing!

Three gypsy brewers were hosted by Picaroons’ resident small batch expert, Iain Brannigan. The recipe was developed by the Biorefinery Technology Scale-up Centre at the Collège Communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick and their research chemist/brewing expert, Mike Doucette.

Spudnik stout features Russet Potatoes from Toner Farms Limited in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Over 200 lbs of NB potatoes were prepared in an automated peeler, which launched the spuds towards the big kettle where they were boiled and mashed.

Spudnik is a smooth and full bodied stout, hopped with Willamette & Golding hops and is 4.7% alc./vol.

We named the beer after the first artificial earth satellite. Sputnik 1 was a totally unexpected innovation from Russia launched in 1957. Sputnik had a huge impact on the perception of science and technology, and inspired many young people to become engineers and scientists.

Taste the beer at Innovation at the Station Friday, September 30th, or fill up your growler at the Picaroons Brewtique!
